Cleopatra Island is a unique place where you have the opportunity to be active, have fun and also explore ancient history. Fresh air, clean turquoise waters, beautiful golden landscapes and fascinating historical sites guarantee an unforgettable vacation.
Cleopatra or Sedir Island is known for its vast golden beach and fascinating ancient city of Cedrae. The most popular and frequently visited places on this beautiful island are the ancient theater ruins and a charming secluded beach in the small bay on the northwest of the island.
It is believed that Queen Cleopatra bathed there and that the pale pink sand on this beautiful beach was brought by ships from North Africa to please her. This type of sand is unique to Egypt, and Mark Anthony sent it to Sedir because his beloved Cleopatra was nostalgic. On the eastern part of the island there is an agora where, according to inscriptions, sporting festivals used to take place.
The golden shade of the sand on this island’s beautiful beaches is the result of a long-lasting process of shell dissolution. This is very rare, so the beach is a government conservation area and visitors are not allowed to take sand with them or spread towels on the beach as the sand will stick to it.
